We have a little sickie on our hands...

Update #2, 2/2/09: We just got back from the doctor's office. Our regular pediatrician was booked solid so we had to see a different one. Lia spiked a high fever (103.4) about an hour and 1/2 before we left and I didn't want to hold off the next dose of motrin...so by the time we got there, her fever was down to 99.4. The doctor ruled out croup, strep throat and ear infections...and pretty much said she has a common cold and just keep treating her fever and giving her liquids and plenty of rest. No problem there...she is in bed beside me now sleeping. Honestly, I felt a little brushed off by the doctor. Lia has had plenty of colds...and even fevers...but this just seems different...worse by far. I also don't take Lia to the doctor often. In fact, when we had her 4 year old check up in December, the nurse noted that we hadn't been in since her three year check up. So long story long...I am still worried...but will keep tabs on the fever and keep doing what we have been to keep her comfortable. Thank you so much to all of you who sent e-mails, commented, called...and prayed. I am sure Lia will be fine, but we sure appreciate the blanket of support we felt around us this morning. Thank you so much.

Update 2/2/09: We had a very rough night. Lia's temperature stayed around 101 even with Motrin. We were so unsure as to whether we should bundle her up and take her to the hospital or wait until the doctor is in this morning. In the end, we let her sleep and I just obsessively checked her temperature every 20 minutes. She has never been this sick...never even taken one round of antibiotics. I am tired and scared and upset. Please pray for us all.

Lia is sick today. She woke up with a croupy type cough (which she has never had before) and a fairly high fever. Motrin has kept the fever down...but I have to say...when she starts that coughing and it seems like she can't breathe...scary for all of us. During one coughing fit, she threw up which was extremely upsetting to her...poor little thing. She is sleeping soundly in our bed as I type and I plan to keep her with us all night (a rare treat...normally she only sleeps in our bed if we all nap together or if Jim is out of town). I just feel she needs to be close.

We have been so lucky as Lia has not had so much as the sniffles this winter...but oh my word...I will be so relieved when she is back to her cheery, healthy self. Please say a little prayer for our girl tonight if you are so inclined.

Oh, poor Lia! I hope that she sleeps well. I will pray for her! I looked up Nepal adoptions out of curiosity. I got excited for you. Is it true that you would be required to adopt a boy if you already have a girl? That woul dbe fun. India is also going very smoothly now. The process has sped up for the time being, and other than a possible backlog of applicants, it is going quickly.

Oh, it is so hard to see your baby sick. Breaks my heart everytime. M's fever got that high or higher in China and I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown and stayed up all night to make sure she was breathing. Hoping she feels better soon. I try to remember the fever is a good thing, it's fighting something her body needs to fight. Get well soon Lia!!!

There is nothing scarier than those high temps and they always spike at night! Hope she's feeling better today! Maddy had croup a few times when she was younger. Take care. Keeping you all in my prayers.

Kate,

I hear ya. Emma was sick when we were in FL a couple weeks ago, was fine for a week and then yesterday morning started with the sniffles AGAIN. I hope that I didn't give Emma the cold. I had the sinus infection and a touch of bronchitis last week.

At 1030 last night Emma had a 103 temp. It is so very scary when they don't feel well, especially with the fever. In our case, the motrin did work but it took about an 1.5 hrs, cold compresses on the head, ceiling fan on, no covers and no shirt. She was burning up.

She has not had a temp yet but does have the cough. From my experience with the doctor's office before, if the cough gets worse, bring her in. If not, it will last 7-10 days. They hate to medicate at a young age.

Kevin is home with her today and I have the phone at work with in arms reach.

I will definately be praying that Lia will feel better soon.

Hi Kate -

It is scary. Emily has always gotten high fevers and keeps them even with Motrin...her last couple of viruses, she had about 103 but it stayed at 101 with feverall and motrin. Just ensure she is drinking a lot, as much as possible with her feeling punky. if she cannot eat, perhaps even give her pedialyte just to keep her electrolytes in check. I have always thought that helps. Thinking of you...you can call me if you have questions 215 942-0443.

Oh Kate! Fevers are so scary. Does she like Gatorade? Ginger Ale? I know that doctors (my husband included)always say that you "can't treat a virus aith an antibiotic" --- but sometimes I KNOW that my kids have a secondary infection (ear or sinus infection?), and antibiotics work wonders. And liquids, like Heather said.

Oh no....my poor Lia lady. I hope she will fight whatever is getting her and be back to her healthy self real soon.
It is really horrible when they are sick. You feel like crap for them.
One suggestion I've been told over and over again is when they have a croupy cough to take them in the bathroom, shut the door and run the shower as hot as possible. The steam will help her breath better.
Also when Jace was in the hospital they told me to use TYLENOL as Motrin does not work for all kids. They would give him Tylenol and the fever would go down but not away and they would alternate with Motrin and the fever would go right back up.

K-sorry to hear Lia is not feeling well. Some people have told me that a cold bath helps to bring a fever down. Also, double check her weight to make sure you are giving her the correct dose on the motrin/tylenol. I would suggest pedialyte ( the clear one-mixed with juice). Aunt C.

I hope Lia is feeling better soon. It is so rough when they are sick. If you feel you need to go back to the doctor's, do so, make them listen to you. A mother knows when things are right with their child!
A few things are going around it seems. Lotus woke me up at 1 am last night throwing up, after a bath we got her back to bed but this morning she still couldn't keep anything down. She has been with Kevin all day, I hated leaving her :(

I want to share with you that my daughter had a similar ailment (fever, coughing particularly at night and then vomiting a tiny bit following the cough - and then crying so upset) a few months ago. Her regular doctor also was not available to see her. The Dr. that we saw said my daughter had a virus. My mommy instinct told me that this was not the case, but what could I do? After 7 more days of seeing no improvement (he had said the virus would run its course in 7-10 days), I took my daughter back to the Dr. she typically sees. Her usual Dr. immediately said "post nasal drip" is causing her to vomit after coughing ...she has a sinus infection and will need an antibiotic. After one day of taking antibiotics the vomiting after the coughing stopped!! There are certain doctors out there today that are so insistent on a "viral" diagnosis..I guess because docs got bad press a few years back about over prescribing antibiotics. But, they need to take individual children and their histories into account. I was really upset that my daughter suffered needlessly for an entire week. If you can, I'd try to get a message of concern to Lia's regular Dr. Perhaps he/she might have a different take on Lia's illness.
