Our Favorite Maid....and Other Tales We Love

Lia loves her bedtime stories so much....and it is also one of my favorite times of day. After she is in jammies, with her teeth brushed, we climb up on my bed to read whatever story she has chosen. We actually start talking about what story we will read while we are eating dinner. Lately we have been reading Amelia Bedelia stories...a throwback to my childhood days. This series was originally published in the 1960's and it definitely shows through the language in the book. While I get a chuckle about some of the words, the simple stories are an excellent tool for building vocabulary. Amelia is a maid for the Rogers family...and is forever confusing directions and doing exactly what she is told (for instance, when told to "dust the furniture", she pours powder all over it...at her house they un-dust the furniture! Amelia gets herself into one pickle after another much to the merriment of those reading about her!) Lia is too young to catch all of the blunders and understand it all, but the language is simple enough that she enjoys the story anyway and still gets a good laugh!

This is another classic that Lia loves. We have read it so much that she can recite almost the entire book by memory.

Finally...this is a new one. We have a long wait for our mei mei, but Lia still enjoys reading this book about a little girl who travels to China to bring her mei mei home.

So these are just a few of the books we're enjoying at the moment, but we are always looking for new ones! What's on your shelf these days?? Please share your favorites!

I LOVE Amelia Bedelia. She's my favorite from when I was a girl. I remember laughing at her. I still recall her "separating the eggs" and "rolling the jelly."

Always good to get recommendations. Lindy likes Corduroy and I purchased the Mei Mei book for a friend.

Keep Lia's faves coming our way!!!

Love you,
Lisa

Hi Kate!
Ainsley LOVES Amelia Bedelia!!!! Have you introduced Fancy Nancy into Lia's world yet? If not, she will probably love those too. I am the blessed friend who got Mei Mei from Lisa!!!! I hope you are having a great Friday!

I loved Amelia too- and now so does Allison. The book where she takes care of a baby is pretty funny too!

And I read Diana's comment about Fancy Nancy- GET IT!! It's the cutest book. We just have the "original" one, I guess. I didn't know there was a series- uh oh! Allison got it for her b-day and already has it memorized- we've read it a LOT! :)

That Amelia Bedelia is funny! I'll have to see if we still have one and start reading it with Maddy. Have you read "A Mother For Choco" -- it's a sweet little book! Have a good weekend.

We will have to check out Amelia Bedelia, my Lily loves 8 silly monkeys but one of her favorites is a book one of my travel mates got her called, Always there for you, written by Sasha Quinton. You can quote the first page and she will immediately wrap her arms around herself and give hugs, like I have done since day 1 to her, always makes me smile :)

I love Amelie Bedelia as well. Other series books that I love are Olivia, Eloise (I sometimes wish I were Eloise)and Fancy Nancy. Lucy is a little young for all of these but she enjoys the pictures - especially Olivia!

One of our very favorites is The Jazz Fly - it has a CD that goes along with the book and Lucy loves to dance to it as we read the book.

Some other great books that we like are Yum Yum Dim Sum, Whoever You Are (Mem Fox), When You Were Born in China, The White Swan Express and I Don't Have Your Eyes.

I could go on and on as we love to read and have shelves full of books! Thanks for sharing your favorites!

I used to love Amelia Bedelia! That was one of my favorites.

My all time favorites were Eloise, Madeline, and Angelina Ballerina.

I also loved Rainbow Brite and Strawberry Shortcake. I hear she's making a comeback :)
